swapping males?

Post by rafadiaz » Wed Jun 18, 2008 10:29 pm

I have a pair of finches that have a baby that is a few days old, however, the male seems to be aggressive with the female at times. He seems to be good with the baby.

I have another pair that gets along but they have no eggs.

Should I swap the males or should I wait untill the baby is 5-6 weeks old?

If he is fightin with her you can just take him out till the mom is done raising the baby.

rafdiaz, are you sure the male is aggressive and not trying to start a new clutch with the hen, it is not uncommon for birds to contemplate breeding before the babies have weaned. If he is really aggressive to the extent that he might injure the female you can remove him and leave the chick raising to the female, just be sure she is feeding the chick before removing the male.

seperated pair

I seperated them, leaving the female with the nest

The male plucked feathers from her back everytime she was eating

BTW When do I put them back together?

I have another pair that get along but they have no eggs.

When the babies are old enough can the male be swapped for the other male of the pair with no eggs or does the male need time to get his strength like the female?

no, you can swap them but, if she is already paired up with him then if you swap them they may not breed. usually ppl breed there zebras about 3 time before giving them a break until next year.
