Gouldian nests ive used this year

Post by spn1979 » Sun Oct 11, 2015 1:34 am

I was asked to post some pics of nest I've used this year. First is my red head pair. A small stick nest wich I don't like. I bought the pair as proven and it was the nest they came with but I won't use again. For whatever reason they only wanted to raise one chick both clutches this year and the other babies were somehow sacrificed. Not sure It was the nest.

My blue pair used this bamboo nest for 2 clutches. There young and we're unsuccessful. He was such A good builder it was all most impossible to do nest checks. I gave them a different nest wich I'll show and went for a 3rd and now a 4th with better luck.

Same blue pair with a wooden box nest wich they readily accepted. They started a 4th clutch well before there baby fledged.

Pair 3 are yellow heads with a wooden box type nest. Dad was scatted from his previous owner wich may have affected his fertility. They only managed one dead in shell baby in 2 clutches so far. I was having some succes using them as fosters for a little more than 2 weeks before they decided they didn't wanna do it anymore and the chicks died.

Pair 4 salmon head wb/bb male with a rh/pb/gb hen. My stubborn pair, finally after 4 months and several nest options they settled on the bamboo nest I took away from my blue pair. Luckily he's not as good a builder and I'm expecting some hatchlings next weekend.

Nice assortment.
Interesting that your gouldians use the open front box. I was told to use ones with a small hole, to give them more privacy. But I guess a nest is a nest is a nest. If they want to mate they take what they are given.

I use outside hanging nests, makes for much easier nest checks and cleaning than an inside the cage nest. Although I have had to cut the rods of some cages to make a door and be able to use an outside cage nest with those cages.
