Tiny Owl Out And About

Hello All Owl Lovers

Around mid day today, I noticed only one baby Owl in the Star nest.
Looking around the flight floor, I couldn't spot the little fella anywhere.
My eyes scanned all the perches, plants, other nests, nooks and crannies.

Nothing.

At this point, I was starting to get a little worried, wondering if he could have possibly squeezed out between the bars and dropped to the floor.

Opening the bottom flight door, I slowly started moving some containers around, and there he was, sheltering under the lip of a a plate holding wild grass seeds.

Sigh of relief ~~~ :-)

He came waddling out, stretching his tiny wings out, looking around curiously, his tiny face a question mark.

I decided to settle myself down into a chair and watch for a while.

Parents Sunny and Sam, appeared to be busy flitting about, apparently not too concerned about their little foster child being out and about in the big world, all alone and looking for trouble.

Everyone else however came over to check him out, and the Owl pair appeared to be absolutely fascinated with their first born child (whom they abandoned still in the egg). Both left their Easter basket nest to come look at him again and again. It was almost as if something in them recognized him as the same species (if not their progeny).

Finally little tater tot decided to take an upward leap, landing right in the bath :shock: . Amazingly enough, he managed to propel himself upwards again, and shot out of the water as if it were hot oil.

He landed on a spray of millet and did a little 'lumberjack on a log in the water' dance, before landing on his fuzzy wet butt on the newspaper looking somewhat disgruntled.

He stayed like that for a while, until I finally picked him up and returned him to the nest and his sibling.

Shortly thereafter parents offered a snack, and kids settled in for a nap.
Last I checked both babes are snuggled together in the nest :-).

It sounds like he had quite an adventurous first day out of the nest, thank goodness you found him. I'll bet he had a nice long nap after that, and then probably regaled his sibling with tales of his explorations! :lol:

That's not actually his first time, bless his little Owly heart.
He tipped out once before a few evenings ago. Poor little fella, was running around in circles on the flight floor.

He was definitely more calm today, even with his unexpected bath :-D.

Both babes should be fledging in the next couple of days give or take. This little guy is just in a bit of a rush.

Wonderful news!
congratulations =D>

Elana, have you tried to clean the lens of your phone with window cleaner? My husbands phone used to get like that, always blurry no matter what he does. I took window cleaner, spray a towel and gently wipe the lens. Wah lah clear pictures again.
Of course not sure if it's just me but I have a very difficult time seeing your pictures clearly.

I just love how clumbsy they get when they first fledge. Especially cute when they try and give a wing a good stretch and fall over on their face. <3 Sounds like he's gonna be a very assertive little one!

It's not the lense on my stupid phone, it's the stupid phone itself, #-o . Or maybe the owner, lol.

It is so temperamental, it drives me nuts.
Some days, no matter what I do with it, every picture comes out a blurr. I try to reset it, tap it, automatic this, automatic that, and still a blurr.

It does better outdoors, but Indoors it depends on the mood it's in on that particular day.

Time for a new phone :-).

When he fell into the tub, I almost had a heart attack, but he shot out of there, faster than Bubba shooting out of bed, when someone says let's go pig hunting!

Yes, I think this little one is definitely going to be assertive, or maybe he's just clumsy (keeps falling out of the nest). Or maybe it's his little brother, who keeps booting him out of the nest just for fun :twisted: "Look down there bro, is that a mealworm? Look further down...." Ooops!!! Cackle~snort , he 'fell' for it again, what a L-) L-) L-)

Thanks Kelly
They are really cute once they start feathering out and looking like real Owls (or like real birds rather than aliens for that matter of fact :-))

@Babs

Sorry about the ice tea (of which I happen to be a great fan).

@debbie276

Phone camera in a somewhat better mood today, lol.

And here he is, the little rascal himself, out and about the town again today. I think I can assume, that he is now officially a 'Fledgling'.

Note the little antena eyebrow :-)
