Shaftail + Society finch hybrid?

Post by NDan » Fri Aug 22, 2008 9:17 am

Does anyone know if Shaftails can crossbreed with society finches?
I have 2 babies that are under a society hen and the male shaftail is feeding and taking good care of them also. There is no female shaftail in the flight so they can't be shaftail babies.
Their coloring doesn't look like societies so I am now wondering.

Is there any chance you can post a picture or two?

I'm working on getting a picture but have none yet. They keep diving into the nest so you only get pics of butts sticking up!

Ah yes! The old "butt-shots". I'm very familiar with getting those from my finches too! Silly fids!

According to the species info at the FIC, Shaft-tails can cross with Societies, and many other species, as well. Please post pics when they fledge, will be interesting to see what they look like.

I definitely have crosses. The babies have a light brown bib and color around the eyes. I uploaded a picture in the chicks/jueveniles section of the gallery.

I think they look like societies with a suntan. The shaftail is a fawn so the coloring is muted.

The hen is a pied fawn. very pretty. I didn't intend to get hybrid babies. Thought I was getting society chicks. Oh well. they are entertaining!
