Panic to Switch-a-roo Gouldian morning.

This morning while doing my usual rounds, Bill decided to help out. He's taller than me, I was using him to peek in nest boxes while I did water changing.

Cranky Brat (if some remember this female gouldian) had hatched her first egg and is raising a 6 day old chick.

Bill checks her nest. "Ummm, honey........ :-\ "

Okay I dont like the sound of that "umm honey". I FREEZE with each hand holding a poopy bathdish from the societies. (by the way this is never an attractive pose).

I'm staring at him like "what, WHAT??" X_X

Bill scratches his head "There's another chick in there" :-\

Me : WHAT??? I zoom into the kitchen spilling poop water on my shirt, toss the dishes in the sink, zip back to the living room, get a step stool and peer into the nest.

And yep, there it is. A newly hatched baby squirming helplessly under the FAT BUTT of a 6 day old chick! :-SS
And you know this chick is thinking "what did I do to deserve THIS"??

My face has a desperate look of "I DONT WANNA HANDFEED AGAIN." :((

Then my wonderful Bill, cool as a cucumber points to my other gouldian's (Bri's cage that hatched 3 yesterday). :YMSMUG: "She's got one egg unhatched, put the chick in there and pull out the egg" :YMSMUG:

BRILLIANT!! :-! So we check Bri's egg for viability (its a dud), and while the parents are shoo-ed out to grab a bite to eat, we EGG-change Brat's newborn into Bri's nest of newborns removing the dud egg.

Brat went back to feeding her 6 day old, Bri went right back to feeding her 3 dayolds + Brat's newborn.

All is well in the world again. Phew..... #:-S (Thanks to Bill on that one).

Six day difference, wow!

So glad that Bill came up with the plan to stick the tiny tot under Bri's butt, and that she accepted him :-).

Glad that worked out. I don't recall the genetics of both sets of parents - will you be able to tell later which chick is the one you moved?

Brats baby that was moved is green/blue (had yellow middle nodules, so will look normal). Bri, the new momma is a normal.

So alas... No way to tell them apart now. Just glad Bri didnt notice and took him up as her own.
