Zebras eggs and chick tossing

It's not for advice I'm after but more to share what I found this morning.

For me, it was a first but perhaps many of you will have witnessed this before. We all know how rampant zebras are for breeding and I should know as I have 3 breeding couples all going for it at the moment.

Currently the 3 couples are in different stages of egg laying to hatchlings. I have one couple, a black cheeked male and a penguin (is that the correct name for them) female paired who had been sitting on 6 eggs, 5 fertile with the oldest hatching on Friday. Another came yesterday and due to my calculations the 3rd should have hatched today.

So this morning, as per usual I've checked the nest boxes. I should have found 3 chicks + 3 eggs but what I came across was 2 chicks + 1 egg!

Turns out the Friday (oldest) hatchling was on the floor, still alive thank goodness and the eggs were smashed on the floor, one sadly bloodied but luckily the other wasn't fertilised. I collected up the chick and warmed it in my hand and then placed it back in the nest. I inspected the egg with blood as it was still whole although in my opinion it hand puncture marks. It didn't appear to just be smashed due to the fall. The other was like a cracked egg, yolk in sight.

The parents have continued their duties today are feeding all 3 chicks as normal. My immediate thought was they had had a fright in the middle of the night. The only thing that goes against that is their nest is pretty damned clever. They've left a well where the eggs and chicks are towards the back of the box so if they bolted I'd expect the young would stay safe. It's just a first for me.

Its the cocks first time but its her second and she has been a good mum raising 6 babies before. All very strange. So a little bit of bad and good news all rolled into one.

It's hard to say what could have happened.

If it is a male on his first time, I'd watch him. Sometimes the boys get all excited about the breeding part, but not so much about raising the kids

If this happens again, personally I would move him to different accommodations, and see how Mum does on her own.

lovezebs I'm watching closely since this. So far all is ok. The male is doing his duties very well as far as I can see and shares incubation/feeding evenly. When he's in the box and I lift the lid to usher him out hes steadfast and wont move! He's doing well in my opinion.

Are Zebras known for pecking an egg?

Aww I found the last egg on the floor this morning. Also been pecked and kicked out. All very off. Perhaps it is the male? The 3 chicks are fine and ok though growing well.

I'll breed this male again though and see what happens. I'm sure it's not the hen, she's been a star before with 6 chicks!

If these eggs didn't hatch, then it's entirely possible that they were not fertile, or dead in the shell. Some birdie parents will toss eggs that are not likely to hatch, and some won't. Anyway, three beautiful babies, and all is well.

lovezebs no I know Elana.

The egg was fertile and was the second time they threw it out. I understand a little boob or an unfertile after 3 weeks but these are live actively ready to hatch so feels sad but I'm breeding rabbit birds. They WILL makeup for time x

Birds are so unpredictable. I love their little souls.

You know Sue, at times these tiny little guys know more than we do.
Maybe there was something wrong with the chicks in those eggs, who knows .

My other couple threw their 6th and last fertile egg out last night as it was due to hatch within 24 hours. As this was a different and also experienced couple I thought that exact same thing Elana. Perhaps there was something going on there we just wont know.

I've now got 8 happy babies between the 2 couples though and my white pair are laying now too. Soon be babies babies babies everywhere hehehe

Sorry about the tossed eggs, but... what can you do.....

Glad to hear that there are 8 bouncing infants in your nests, and hoping for more :D .
