PICTURES! Baby Zebras, newly fledged

Post by Animalzoo » Fri Apr 08, 2016 11:58 am

Here are some pictures of my new Zebra babies. Very pretty youngsters.

Dad is a black cheeked. Mum is a Pengiun (is that the right description?) I have 3 babies from them, one white (how?!), one like mum with white cheeks and one like dad, looks like will turn out normal grey and maybe black cheeks if a boy.

And one of the young ones fostered out (where the Dad's just passed away). Mum and dad were fawns so no surprise with these ones.

I just fancied sharing. They are very pretty, if I do say so myself hehe

With zebras you can get a chick with its lines going back a few generations, and skipping those in between. That's how you get chicks that don't look like the parents. Happened to me a few times :?

I've had WHITE chicks when neither parent was white nor visually pied. But keep an eye on the white one. For some strange reason whenever I've had a white fledgling, the mother would start to pick on it. I had to separate the white fledgling with the father, and let the mother take care of the non-white fledglings.

Interesting. I'll certainly keep a close eye. I'll be breeding this couple again so maybe I'll be seeing more whities. Thanks.

Hey Sue....

Nature gives and nature takes.
Are these the babies of your poor little fella (that you recently lost)?

They are super adorable. Makes one almost want to set up a pair of Zebras, just to get some cutie babies like these..... I said 'almost ', lol.

Congratulations!

lovezebs Yes, the bottom 2 photos are 2 of his babies. There were 3 in total that he had. They are basic fawns, not sure of their genders yet but like I said if I get a boy from them I'm tempted to keep him.

The other babies are from greys. The dad is a BC who's beautiful. Is there such a name as a Penguin? If so, then the mum is a penguin. So the 2 are greys. Is that the right terminology. They've made super cute babies I think the mum carries a white gene because they've had a white baby in this clutch and do you recall the white girl in with Mr Melanitis, well she belongs to to this mum too.

I took the nest out a few days ago and already they're trying to nest in a seed cup and an egg appeared in there today! Cheeky mum and dad. They're still feeding babies though and I'm watching closely for squabbling but so far we're ok.

Go on, I dare you......pair up a couple of pretties

It looks like your black cheek male is carrying the gene for CWF (chestnut white flanked) which would be the reason why you have a white baby. It is a sex linked gene so I think if I can remember right your baby will be a female.
Also your other normal grey baby will be orange cheek male or female, split to black cheek.
Is you penguin female spilt to black cheek?
If she isn't then all of your chicks will be split to black cheek but will not visually show the black cheeks, (unless your female is split to black cheek)
Cindy is very knowledgeable when it comes to zebra finches maybe she will chime in and explain in better detail about the genetics of zebra finches.

Oh you evil temptress.....

I may set up a pair of pretties in June or July, following my move. I really don't want to have to deal with moving eggs and or babies next month.

More baby pictures please.
