Hi all. I have a pair of societies that have five three day old chicks in the nest. I wonder can any identify what mutation the mom and dad are? And what I should expect the chicks to look like? Their dad or mom or some of each?

What pretty birds
Not an expert by a long shot, but I think you would get some of both.

I'm definitely not a society expert, but I think the top one is chestnut pied or fawn pied, and the bottom is chocolate pied. I actually had a crested chocolate self female society breed with a fawn self male society, and ended up with a fawn self male society.

Thanks for that. I was told at the pet store that the dad was creamo but when I looked it up it wasn't exactly the same. I find that when it comes to society genetics it's a fine line finding out what mutation they are. It's so much more clear-cut with guoldian's.

They are lovely. It won't be long before I find out the babies are already a week old today.

I agree it looks like you've a fawn and a chocolate, i think the white marks around face means the're split for recessive pied so on average 25% of chicks will be pieds, 50% chocolate split pied like parent and 25% selfs. Colorwise they'll all be chocolate unless the chocolate parent is also split for fawn.

So Padraic do you have the good oil on visually distinguishing the various pied phenotypes? For example, what are the visual characteristics of dominant pied?
Cheers.
