This morning I noticed eggs in a hutch in the Gouldian cage; QUICKLY put a nest box in.
Broke 3 eggs transferring them to nest box; 2 put in successfully.
Cock is RH/b/y PC/w SFYB/b 4 years old, great dad in the past. Hatched March 2012
Hen is RH/y WC Silver 1 yr old with stubby foot (toes broken off) Hatched March 2015
Babies will be any color imagineable
I did not plan on breeding them, as I wasn't even sure if the Hen was a hen
Both are birds I raised; they were actually living in "retirement" with my Cuban Melodious Finch.
We'll see what happens now; they are VERY interested in the nest box I just put in. Pic shows the hutch type thing they laid the first eggs in.

Well, six eggs have been laid in the box after a short pause from above posts; She's now sitting tight. The male is intent on building a BOWER for her

I usually put grasses in the cage for them to eat the seeds, but he is intent on taking every one inside the box; several at time in his beak I was surprised to see. Very diligent little husband.

Hello Dolly,
I was just about to ask the forum what kind of external nest box to use on my Prevue 040 cage, and from the picture above, I think you have the same-type door on your cage. If I may ask, what nest box did you use (dimensions), how did you attach it, and what you use for nesting material?
Thanks,
Luis

Luis, it's in the stores as a "parakeet" nest box; usually about $10. 8-1/2 tall, 7 wide, 7-1/2 deep. Put screw hooks in the end & hang on the open cage door frame. Wood chips/shavings are a good starter base inside. Some add other things; i.e. coconut fiber, dried grasses, shredded paper, etc.

Luis,
I use coconut fiber and just recently switched to sisal.
I only switched to sisal because I have a nestcam, and the coconut was absorbing the little light that got into the nest. The sisal makes for a brighter camera image.
I make mine out of 1/2 gallon milk cartons, cut and taped together. This allows me to change the size/shape for the particular cage, and to put an inside hallway into the nest. This thread has a pix of my milk carton nest box.
