Brooding Goldbreast how long is too long?

Post by kyle » Sat Sep 03, 2016 12:57 am

Hi all,. my Goldbreast finches decided to give nesting another try. They have tried twice before unsuccessfully. Once due to infertile eggs and the second time 2 eggs were infertile and 2 died right after hatching. It's been 20 days since they started breeding this time and I don't hear any babies. I've noticed their consumption of insects has increased and they're acting as though something's going on in the nest but I think I would have heard something by now? I've been tiptoeing around their cage for the last month it would be disappointing if none of the eggs hatched. They are very skittish particularly when nesting so other than daily feeding I stay out of their business. The male especially doesn't like any kind of eye contact . LOL. If the eggs are infertile how long will they continue to brood them before giving up?

They might have some quiet 5 day old babies in there. ;) How many days into egg laying did she sit tight? Im hoping you have some little ones.

Hi babs :). Curiosity got the better of me this morning. When feeding them I took a chair because they're pretty high up and took the quick peek in the nest. I did see a incredibly small puff of downey fathers in the center of the nest. From the pictures I have seen of Gold breast babies I think that's what it is. It was such a quick glance that I couldn't tell you how many or even if they're alive. The entire puff in the center is no larger than a bumblebee. It's very encouraging! Hopefully in the next few days I will hear them begging. [-o<

Holding my fingers crossed for you.

Congrats on the Goldbreast babies, they do have a lot of white or light down on them. Many of the waxbills are very quiet at first, never making enough noise for you to hear them.

Truly a fantastic result, you've done well there :-BD

Waxbills are not necessarily the easiest to breed at the best of times,

Congrats to you =D>

Can't wait to see em once they've moulted out
