worried about chicks not leaving nest

Post by EmeraldToucan » Sat Sep 20, 2008 12:16 am

I have three society finch chicks which are still in the nest, and they are about a month old now, and really well developed. I managed to get one out of the nest (I'm hating these wicker basket nests because it's nigh impossible to remove eggs, and a real pain removing chicks). Anyhow this bird did look really well feathered out, and healthy, the only flaw with it from what I could tell was a small bald spot on the breast. Most birds I've had left the nest a bit before they were this well developed. These chicks as far as from what I've seen haven't left the nest even once (not counting my removing one).

However I haven't bred finches before, I've mostly worked with budgies, cockatiels, and ring neck doves. Is it normal for such old well developed chicks to still be in the nest?
Anyhow I put the chick back in the nest, and parents got back to feeding the chicks right away.

they will leave when they are ready to. societies enjoy going back into their nests no matter how old they are. on a regular basis I still see all 7 of my societies in the same nest preparing to bed down for the night.
Addicted to Finches, yes I do admit it.
I pray they never find a cure.

I agree. They love a nest. That is why I always hate to remove all nest from my aviary because they just love to sit in a nest. I think they will come on out soon.
