Brat had a first clutch and an accidental toss

Well Brat and Ricco's first babies this season are hatching this morning.

I took a look in the cage and there was a little one on the floor. Eggshell was stuck to his little bum. Im assuming in their zealousness to eat the eggshell, they carried off the little on with it. I do certainlly hope this isnt a purposeful tossing. They didnt toss last year.

Actually this is my first tossed chick.

I placed him back in the nest with one other hatched sibling (so far). He's very cold & weak and I'm hoping not injured from that big fall. :( Hoping mom's body heat will perk him back up and he will have the strength to beg. He is not begging. Wish him luck. And hope he's the only one they toss [-o<

Keeping my fingers, toes, eyes, and legs crossed over here for the tiny one.
I really hope Baby pulls through and makes it [-o< .

Thank you ladies. I figured Brat will do a better job at helping him along than I can by force feeding. So I will check again in a few hours. He can survive on his yolk the first 12 plus hours if he's still weak.

Its the damage from the fall that might be the problem. And we all know thats not something I can mend. If thats the case, its best he be under the warm, soft butt of momma, if he is going to pass.

Fortunantly she went right back in and stayed after I put him back.

Hopefully she'll know what to do with him.
I have found, that most of the time the Mama knows a lot more than we do when it comes to her babies.

If he gets tossed again, I would assume that there is something wrong with him. You could try handfeeding for a while, to see if he'll survive....

Good luck to the little one.

Well your good energy sure is working. I peeked in during my lunch break and the little one's head is upright and just a'wobbling away!! I can't even tell which one was tossed. #:-S

He survived one heck of a drop, about 2 1/2 feet. Tough little booger. And Brat is being one great momma! :YMDAYDREAM:

I just heaved a sigh of relief here (and made myself laugh).
I'm really happy that little eager beaver survived his first...er...flight =D>

Sometimes they just accidently fall out, stuck to Mom's behind or something similar.

Now you made me laugh. Visualizing the poor baby stuck to Brat's butt in mid-air! "MOMMY NOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooo!"

That about sums up her attitude when she's headed for the morning boiled egg! She snarls at everything while she gorges yelling "eh eh eh eh". Ricco, her kids (last year) couldn't touch the stuff til she was done.

She probably saw him drop and figured she'd go back after she stuffed herself. Wicked little beast she can be. Sigh, I love her. hee hee

Babs, that's exactly what happened with my little Java chick. He hadn't been on the bottom of the cage long when I found him....halfway hatched. I put him back in the nest and they have taken great care of him. He should fledge in about 10 days. Glad your little guy made it through the fall and looks just as healthy as the siblings.

I can't keep track of the names everyone assigns their birds.
What kind of a bird is Brat?

Sharon, I know you are SO excited about your java baby! Hes almost grown! It certainly is nerve-wracking when you find them on the floor of your aviary so little and helpless :-SS

Its Brat & Ricco, the gouldian pair last year that made me hand raise their first clutch. Then they finally got their act together and raised their last clutch of 5 babies. Brat is the female gouldian that always hollars & fusses at Ricco (and she pretty much fusses at everything....me, her kids :-L ). And Ricco is whipped. You might remember this crazy pair in this picture.
