Just wondering if any one has had or knows of finches being able to breed with only one leg? Is it possible or unlikely?
I have a male cuban that lost the bottom half of his leg as a youngster, he gets along fine eating,perching etc but not sure if he would be able to breed,any ideas?

You might get a lot of infertile eggs unless he is able to mount the hen when breeding.

only thing you can do to find out is give him a chance

Since the leg was lost as a youngster and he was not born with it there shouldn't be anything wrong with his genetics.

Not too sure about cubans but I've heard of Goulds with one leg successfully rearing a clutch. Might be because Goulds copulate in the nest most of the time but give it a shot and see, should be interesting.

i cant help with the answer to your question but i do have a question of my own. I have seen these birds listed as "Cuban Melodious Finch" are they melodious? I mean, do the males sing a pleasant song? or is it a misnomer?

the cuban males I have seen in the aviaries of friends have had a very pleasant song

the male does have a fairly cheerfull song he is very rarely silent, probably not the best singers but worth having! They are happy little birds

I have a lavender who lost half of a leg in an accident, and like you I'm hoping that he'll be able to successfully mount his little girlfriend. I just gave them a nest, so have my fingers crossed. I'm not sure if they're nest breeders or if they breed while on their perches (haven't spotted any of my lavenders getting romantic) - I wonder where cubans breed?

fingers crossed for them both! Im not sure where cubans breed i my have to do some more research-not as much info on them as some of the other species
