Week Old Baby Found On Cage Floor - Please help!

Hi, I am fairly new to finches and after mine bred we removed all but two eggs and replaced the others with dummy eggs so that we would only get two babies. We don't have enough room for more but wanted to give our pairs the chance to breed. We ended up with only one viable egg which hatched a week ago. All four of my society finches have been taking wonderful care of the baby and all has been well. Today, when we returned from an excursion we found the baby was on the bottom of the cage. Still alive, but cold. We put it back in the nest. We only have the four societies, and two female cordon bleus living in the cage. We have no idea which bird would have pushed the baby out of the nest. Were we right to put the live baby back in the nest? One of the males immediately went back to the nest and started sitting on it again, and it appeared that ONE of the females THOUGHT she was still sitting in there for a reason before I realized that the baby was no longer in there. We don't know how to feed a baby. Can anyone give us quick advice? We don't want this precious baby to die.
Thank you so much!

Hi.
You did right to put baby back in the nest. The adults should continue to feed it.

Sometimes babies accidently fall out of the nest, when one or more of the adults hop out .
There are species, which will not raise a singleton baby, Societies however will raise one baby, with the whole clan feeding it until it'svready to bust, lol.
If baby was still alive when you put it back, then parents and the rest of the crew will know what to do, and how to look after it.
Good luck

Thank you both sooooo much for your replies! All four birds have now fed the baby, so I HOPE all will be well! We don't want to lose this baby! We will be checking more often to see if baby is OK!!!

I agree with Elana, that baby was probably accidentally knocked out of the nest when one of the adults flew out. Societies are usually good parents and often will share parental duties. Good luck with this one, and please keep us posted.
