This is our first successful clutch of Gouldians and we are thrilled. Three of them fledged 8 days ago, and one fledged 11 days ago.

You must frame the bottom picture with the kids looking at mom & dad while the parents seem as if they are giving each other a bit of a kiss. Or maybe its a gouldian high-five ;)

I think it's a kiss :) The hen is done with this clutch and is thinking about the next clutch. The male is doing all the feeding since they fledged.

If you're getting the double flight, its time to start shopping for some gouldian lovelies.

I have seen several mentions of "tight feathers" as a desirable trait in Gouldian fledglings. Does anyone know what that means?

Basically it just means that the bird's feathers sit smoothly against the body, not ruffled or puffed up, fitting well together so as to appear smooth and tight.

Thanks. That is what I thought. I guess it means when they are not preening because most birds (even wild native birds) look a bit fluffy after they have preened, especially their breast feathers. Our Gouldian fledglings started preening a lot about a week after they fledged, and I think our Owl fledglings did the same.

Well, they have to learn how it's done right, lol. Chicks, will actually start preening in the nest . Have you offered them a bath yet? First baths, are always fun to watch  and then \:D/

I wouldn't worry too much of tight feathers on the fledges. If they're not sitting all fluffed up and miserable looking, they're fine. Let's see if I can find a pict of what some of my guys looked like at that stage....
