Videos on how I make and feed formula

Post by Babs _Owner » Thu Jan 05, 2017 11:52 am

Squeezed this in during a heavy work work. Hope I did okay. I might have made a mistake or two during the narration. Hope this helps. Its split into two videos

Part 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tP-oVIibYo

Part 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpkCuvY7PxE

Let me know if it shows up properly!

How cool. The video is good.

I like how you warm up the formula. That is a LOT easier than what I was doing.

I had not thought of using the fake eggs as something to hold heat for the chicks. Another good idea, thanks.

A tip.
To control the temp in the brooder / baby wipe warmer, I used a light dimmer from Home Depot. But I got frequent fairly large temp swings, and I could not get the dimmer adjusted to a somewhat stable temp. Maybe my AC line voltage is not stable.

I bought a somewhat inexpensive thermostat off eBay for $15, and plan to use that to try to hold the temp more stable. The thermostat will measure the temp in the brooder, and turn the power on/off to hold the temp.
I have not tested it yet, to see how well it works. Fingers crossed.

Gary, I buy the Babys R US (generic in store) brand of wipe warmers. As long as I fill the warmer halfway with nesting materials, it stays a constant 90 degrees.

If I fill the warmer up 2/3 with nesting material = 95 degrees (I do this the first 2 days). I use less nesting materials, and tilt the lid open for controling the lower temperatures (85-80 etc as they feather up).

Its really stable. Might be the dimmer messing it up. I have to say the baby wipe warmers dont last but a few months, so I keep 1 extra on standby. They are about 20 bucks. So its worth it to have a back up.

And thanks so much for appreciating the video. :-* Been a crazy, weird month. And Im grateful for my birds right now. Their distraction is great therapy.

I just picked up a new warmer at Walmart--Prince Lionheart brand. I've always had trouble controlling/maintaining temps. I saw a temperature controller for reptiles at Petco today. It was about $55, so not sure if it would work. Says that you set the temp you want, then plug the appliance into the controller and controller into the wall, supposed to maintain it. I think it said it could control 3 appliances. Anyone tried this?

3 devices? Wow! I may look into that for next season. My budget is strapped right now. Im thankful this brooder is very reliable so far. You have a link for that Sally?

I found this online at Petco, it looks to be the same thing, though I thought the one at the store said it could do 3 devices. I can't imagine I'd ever have 3 brooders going at the same time, or even 2, and this one is on sale, so I'm going to get one. I wonder if the local store will price match their online store. Petsmart will not price match their own online store prices!

Also, where did you get that temperature/humidity device? Mine is old and I think not working so well, and it was just one of those tiny ones for reptiles anyway. My local Harbor Freight has the IR temperature device, so I need to get one of those.

Outside temps here today will stay below freezing, so I don't think I'll do any shopping today! Supposed to get better over the weeknd, and then back in 60's next week. It's Texas!

Sally

The digital thermometer I bought from walmart model Acu-rite.

I dont think I'd need 3 brooders either, and if I do fill up 3 brooders, please smack me. :-T

That 3-way looks really neat! ac12 Gary check out Sally's link above. You might like that.

Sally this is the updated version of my thermometer https://www.acurite.com/digital-indoor- ... 891a2.html

I'm going to make this topic a 'Sticky' in the Breeding forum. It always helps so much to see how something is done rather than just read a description.

Oops, I forgot to make this topic a 'Sticky", my bad. I thought I had done it--senior moment. I do that now.
