which nesting box

Well today I was talking to my sister and she would like me to allow my society finches to have a couple of babies. I'am seriously thinking about it! Though I'am not a fan of the bamboo nest, which of these 2 nest should I use? Also what kind of nesting material should I provide? I'am not sure if I'am going to do this, but you never know it's very tempting.

I doubt that Societies will care. They nest on any flat surface.
I've used the wooden box with the top half of the front removed.
A couple of inches of shredded paper is all I put in. Good use of document shredders.

Indeed Societies are unlikely to be too fussy, but if you have a choice, this type works best for most finches:

I just have one of those little bamboo nests and there are eggs after just a couple weeks. I used some blue shredded crinkle paper I had laying around from when I had parrots and I just threw in some soft dog hair from my papillon too at the suggestion of the finch guide book I bought from Amazon. At petco they were using hay and the birds seemed pretty thrilled with that too. They really just use whatever they have available.

They also love the little "hamster balls" for nests too. Our local Petsmart uses them in the finch cages. You have to just drill a hole in the upper back portion so the opening is slightly turned up. Then run a screw with a thumb nut on the back to secure it to the cage, using a couple of washers in between.



Another good idea ( my finches came up with this one) is to purchase a penplax bird bath that hangs outside of the cage. It makes a great nest and you can see in it from the outside without disturbing anything.

My society finches will only use bamboo baskets. Hooded ones are ideal, they use open ones but they always end up empty because the nesting material falls over the edges. I've had some success with grapevine balls in the past but a hooded bamboo nest is always first choice. They don't seem to like the dark space of a wooden box.
