A new Gouldain Fledgling today
This new Gouldian fledged today. 25 days old. Should be a red-headed normal.

Re: A new Gouldain Fledgling today
Elana,
Just one in the clutch. If you remember this is from the female hen that got very aggressive the day her first clutch fledged and she laid her first egg for a second clutch that day. We decided it was better to remove the nest box and have the parents concentrate on their 4 new fledglings. We put this egg in with our Societies (rather then just toss it) that were laying their own eggs and kept removing the Society eggs.
After the 4 Gouldian fledglings were weaned we put them in their own double flight cage and put the nesting box back in. The parents immediately mated and their second clutch of 6 eggs should hatch this weekend. We are hoping 4-6 are fertile. They are excellent egg sitters.
The hen gets a little crazy sometimes in the evening between 6-7 pm, and on 2 or 3 different nights came charging out of the box and chased the male around the cage for a few minutes. Then she goes back in the box and continues sitting on the eggs. In the morning they are both sitting on the eggs and when they eat there is always one sitting on the eggs. Not sure why she does this but to see it happen is a shock! The male is such a good parent and companion to her.

Oh ok, got you.
So this is the kid who was Society raised. Are the Socies still feeding him?
Regarding a nutty female...
She sounds exactly like Babs female 'Brat', who pulls the same stunts.
Some of these gals, get a little crazy when they're in nesting mode.

Re: A new Gouldain Fledgling today
I think this fledgling might be a little bigger then the parent raised fledglings initially were. That may be because only one chick had to be fed versus 4. We will be keeping an eye on that, but there is a 1.5 month age difference.GouldianGuy wrote: sounds like you have some prolific breeders! itd be interesting to see hwo the society raised lil one does compared to the others. Yes, the Societies are still feeding the fledgling. The fledgling is also starting to pick at seed as well. I think they might start laying eggs again in about 3-5 days and we will remove the eggs as they are laid. We don't want any more Societies at the moment.lovezebs wrote: a_gouldian

It also wouldn't be unusual for Socie fed babies to be somewhat bigger. Societies, tend to stuff babies until they are ready to explode.

Elana is right. My girl Brat runs that cage with a whip.
Her hubby Ricco just does what she says and sighs.

I guess it's part of some of their nature. She has been well behaved the last few days and taking a few more breaks and letting the male do more solo nest sitting. The eggs should start hatching sometime between Sat - Mon.Babs wrote: a_gouldian lovezebs

I wish it only looked like "being hen pecked". It looks more like a "murderous rage"

At least when I am in the bird room and see her doing it I walk over and tap on the cage gently and tell her to stop and she goes back in the box and sits on the eggs
