Strange Gouldian pair (?)

Post by a_gouldian » Mon Feb 06, 2017 8:22 pm

I have posted about this pair before but now the tables have turned. When the hen was first sitting on her eggs she would sometimes burst out of the nest box and chase the male.

Now, the chicks (2) are about to fledge (24 days old today), there are 2 new eggs in the nest that were laid over the last two days, and the male is bursting out of the nest and chasing the female energetically around the cage for about a minute and they he goes back in the nest box about once per hour I think. He is doing 80% of the feeding at this time and is sitting on the eggs. Is this normal? I don't understand this pair :)

As long as the eggs are being incubated and the babies are being fed, I wouldn't rock the boat. Whatever they're doing, it seems to be working for them, lol.

The two chicks fledged today and everything seems back to normal. Three eggs in the nest (so far), they are taking turns sitting on the eggs, and the father is doing the feeding. Happy family :)

We keep learning new things from our first prolific breeding pair of Gouldians. Yesterday the parents tossed an egg because a chick pooped on it. We put it back in and they tossed it again within an hour so we tossed it. Last night the two fledglings slept in the nest box and pooped on another egg that got tossed again this morning. Hopefully the fledglings will start sleeping on a branch soon otherwise the current clutch will end up being a non-starter.
