Pastel Gouldians!

Every evening after work, the first thing I do is go into my aviary and check on my birds and put fresh water and seed. I had to take second look at a couple of my juvies coming into color, excited I had several white breast. But then had to do a second take, that's not so white....looks pink.?.!.? So beautiful, I'm thrilled. There is definitely a difference in the breast color. I will try to get more photos so you can see the difference in breast color.

I hope Debbie debbie276 chimes in. I would like to know more about genetic and what it means in breeding.

Maybe you have some lilac breast genes in your parents. What are their colors?

I will have to look at my notes but I do know I only had one OH/LB/GB hen that obviously has the lighter breast. I just thought she was a PB but just not as dark, being a hen. I've read many times on this forum of folks saying they had a lilac breast bird and would show photos but to me they were not as light colored as what they should be. Now that I have this BH baby that is fully colored out, I need to look back at my notes because the OH hen was one of my babies also. I've never purchased (or actually ever seen) a LB at any bird fairs or pet stores before. I need to look back and see which pair produced the OH hen!

Got to my computer, the one on the left looks like it could be a LilacBreasted. Very hard to tell in pictures.
If the parents are both split to LilacBreast you could end up with LilacBreasted chicks. There would be no way of knowing those hidden genes till it pops up in a chick.

How light does the breast color need to be to determine if it is Lilac breasted? I will try to get more photos this weekend and post them.

On hens it is a very pale pink color. It is a lot easier to distinguish the colors, especially in pictures, if you have at least a purple and lilac in the same picture. Are your other hens breast color much darker then those?
Keep in mind a young chick may have a pinkish breast color but really be a WhiteBreast. Some call it a "dirt white breast" and it will turn all white the next molt.
