Breeding Red-headed to yellow-headed Gouldians?

We have mainly red-headed male juvs from the red-headed pair we bought in Sept. We will be getting some hens to breed to some of these this coming Fall. I was thinking of getting a few yellow-headed white breasted hens. Is there any reason this wouldn't be a good idea?

That would be fine, this is what you would get color wise as long as there aren't any hidden genes in your males. If you got YH/WB females your babies would all be visually Red head split to yellow head and purple breast split to white breast.

Thanks for the reply. To get yellow-heads do you have to breed yellow-head to yellow-head or yellow-split to yellow-split?

I always thought it was OK, until I notice that the babies from the Pairing of YH to RH had very bad color on their heads. The red was not good. I was told by a finch judge who breeds gouldians NEVER to breed RH to YH, YH to BH and BH to RH is OK.

To get YellowHead chick's the chick needs to get a YH gene from each parent. That can be from a YH parent or a split to YH parent, any combination.

Was told by the NFSS Finch Show Judge that it is not fine. The Red Heads get a very diluted color to their heads, don't do well at shows. He said breeding RH and BH and OH and BH is fine, never mix YH and RH.
