Love is in the air...

Post by Sheather » Mon Mar 27, 2017 10:44 pm

My crested canary Maggie and red factor Milo didn't waste a second! They've consummated their relationship numerous times already, she spent today building a nest, and he's been feeding her since yesterday.
Eagerly awaiting that first little blue egg now!

Well Maggie's been in breeding condition since I got her back two weeks ago, so she saw this new guy and she was like
Seems like he was just as ready, he puffed up and started to sing, she squatted and did her "come hither" call, and that was that.

And that's been that about ten times a day since.

The next day she started nesting and by this evening, her nest basket was full and she was sitting inside as he delivered food to her. It's the fastest I've had a pair of birds pair up, ever.

(I know crossing canary breeds is generally frowned upon by canary people but I keep birds for my own enjoyment, don't intend to produce any birds above pet quality, and am very excited to see what sort of babies these two very unique parents produce.

The female has red factor genes, too, but it's restricted to her tail and shoulders and not obvious because she's never been color fed. That might change if she begins to eat the carotenoid-enriched red factor egg food I'm offering for Milo, though.)

All I can say is:

WOW!!!

As for crossing different Canaries :-J

I'm dying to see those Giraffe necked infants in two week's time.

Best of luck!

You will have some nice babies there.

Following genetic rules the chicks will be:

- 50% crested and 50% normals

- Mostly variegat, but with chances for pure yellow, orange or green babies.

- All non-frost feather.

But we never know the splits :-?? , so there could be surprises :-D

This hen's brother was a very nice mottling of yellow and orange. I am hoping some of this pair's babies will look like him.

lovezebs no, not yet. She filled the nest cup nicely and seems satisfied, as she stopped adding materials. The male hasn't sung in a couple days and I haven't seen any more mating. She periodically goes and sits in the nest and he feeds her but she's still spending most of her time out of it. We will see what progresses - both birds seem really happy together and to be getting along very well.
