How to stop female from laying eggs

Post by Lightbulb » Fri Apr 28, 2017 11:25 am

This question is actually about a pair of canaries, but I think it will pertain to all finches, so here I am. :-)

Ok, don't make fun of my naïveté, but once you want to be done breeding and you separate the male and the female, will she be laying "clear" eggs all spring, or is there something I can do to stop the laying of eggs? I just don't want to be hard on her body.

Remove the nest and keep her out of visual contact with the male.
That is what I do with my gouldians.

Also slowly cut off the high proteins until your down to seeds with some greens. Keep her on that for a few weeks, then slowly start bringing the proteins back up again in much smaller amounts than during breeding or moulting time.

You can also shorten the day light hours, by covering her cage from early evening until morning.

Good luck
