Java finch behaviour

Post by Albinosilver » Mon May 08, 2017 10:44 am

I have a pair of fawn javas that I plan on breeding. They get along very well during the day. I see them perched next to each other preening and there's never any problems. But as soon as it's evening, the male gets very restless. He'll hop in and out of the nest box and "poke" the female with his beak. Sometimes he'll even chase her and the two squabble. The next morning, it's all back to being normal and peaceful.

Does anyone know why this is happening? The female is fine and doesn't seem to be hurt by the male.

My guess would be, that he wants to encourage her to sleep in the nest box.

They may not be on the same page in regards to breeding.
Your boy might be ready, but your girl maybe not be ready.

Unless he gets aggressive, I wouldn't worry too much.
Do you know if they eventually sleep in the next box or on the perch?

The male always sleeps in the nest and the female sleeps on the perch outside. After he has settled, if the female gets too close, he'll open his beak and chatter at her like he's defending the nest or something. It's just so strange like he can't decide exactly what he wants or something.

Also, the male sings a lot but he never dances. He kinda just sits there and sings. Does that mean he's not interested in the female?
