Finally a hatchling :D :D

Post by StodOne » Wed May 10, 2017 2:07 pm

So as some of you may know my female canary had an unsuccessful clutch recently where all the eggs didnt hatch . Some time passed and she started laying eggs again , 2 of eggs didn't make it , either fell off from the nest or got damaged and 2 eggs remained in the nest .
Just a few moments ago I decided that its time to turn off the lights in the room to let them sleep when i notice that she isnt inside the nest , i walk up to the nest to check and there is a beautiful little chick :D :D .
I turned off the lights and turned on the night lights and she immediately jumped into the nest and made this beautiful sound as if she was talking to the little chick .
There is one more egg inside but I think that it isn't fertile but who knows I might be wrong .
Now because this is my first time that I have a bird that actually was successful somewhat at breeding , can any of you who already had hatchlings explain to me what I need to do?
I plan to give them hard boiled eggs , I don't know what else I should give them.
I gave them chickweed before I even knew that it hatched , is it bad or good to give them greens while they have to feed the young? I am clueless , thanks in advance.
Also I don't want to take pictures just now because it is kind of late , i'd rather take a photo tomorrow.

You sound just a little excited

Good quality seed, hard boiled eggs, greens, and some fruit (like apples, etc.)
Mom and Dad, will do the rest.

I hope the other egg baby hatches as well.

Good luck and good night,

Well now that canaries got successful with their eggs , i'm just hoping that my zebra finches will be too because the female layed an egg in a mineral dish/cup . I am just afraid that the same thing doesent happen to her that happaned to my last female zebra that started laying egg after egg and then eventually got egg bound , i am giving my zebras far less hard boiled eggs only once a week if not even less , they do have a coconut nest but she layed the egg in a mineral dish i dont know what to do about it :?

lovezebs I am not sure if they are feeding the baby chick anything , i've put hard boiled egg and apple inside their cage but when i checked a few moments ago the little chick raised his head and opened his beak as if he wanted food , he kept beeping and chirping last night under the mom , I am not sure if she understands that she needs to start feeding him because she keeps sitting in the nest as if she was sitting on eggs .
Does anyone know how to exactly know if she is feeding him or not.

Are they first time parents?

If the chick is begging, that's usually a good sign.
You say he hatched 2 days ago? Usually they can live off their yolk sac for a day or so, and then the parents start feeding.

At first you can't really see too much, but you should see a tiny bit of food in the crop, like maybe the head of a pin, then the crop gets a bit bigger everyday and you should see more food in there.

If the chick becomes silent, then you need to check on him. It could mean that he is well fed and happy, or that he's not being fed and is too weak to beg.

Here are a few pictures of my guys to give you an idea of the stages....

The green arrows, are pointing to the crop on the baby where you should see food.

lovezebs I didnt really see the crop yet as the chick is just too tiny , yes he keeps begging and when i checked today i slowly moved the mother when she moved the chick was positioned in the fetus position and the quickly lifted up his head for 3 seconds then dropped it down again and as it beeped it looked like he was having hickups it was kind of funny.
I recorded him for around 10 seconds i will see to upload the video tomorrow.

Congratulations on the little chick. he/she looks to be doing good in the video you posted.
I have 3 pairs of canaries with chicks now. Usually the first day the parents don't feed the chicks because of the yolk sack that the chick has left over from when it was int he egg. then for the next couple of days your canaries will feed a fine milky substance to the chicks (which is from the parents chewing up their food to very fine bits so it looks very runny like baby formula) after a few days it is easier to see the crop on the baby and the parents will start to consume more egg food and feed that to the chicks in larger quantities.
They say that for the first few days of the chicks life it's not the greatest to feed hard boiled eggs because it is harder for the baby chicks to digest the egg. I personally have never had a problem with this but i try to give the parents a good choice of greens, apples and soaked seed to feed the babies and then after day 3 or 4 i add in hard boiled eggs for the parents to feed the chicks.
Best of luck to you.

lovezebs So i decided to wake up early this morning and watch the bird behavior a little bit , mom refuses to get out of the nest unless she absolutely needs to , dad i think gathers food and then she starts to make this beeping sound and it seems that the male feeds her i dont know if this is a good thing or bad , not sure if they do it like that , maybe dad finds food and mom feeds them? It was really strange.

Chrismurdoch3 Thanks , i gave them the choice of hard boiled eggs at the start, apple , i dont plan on boiling seeds because my grandfather never did it and he had a lot of successful clutches , and when you come to think of it nothing would actually soak the seeds for them in nature , thanks for the tips though because i didnt know what was going on this morning the male canary went back and forth gathering food to feed the mom instead od the baby xD

Usually a male canary will feed a sitting hen and the hen in turn feeds the babies - only a tiny bit at a time at first, and sits tight to keep them warm. Most males don't feed their babies directly until they leave the nest.

Sheather Thanks , I am pretty sure that she is feeding him , saw her do it , although I didnt see her put food directly into his mouth because I didn't have an angle from where I was sitting I saw her bobbing her head as if she was getting ready to feed and then put her head under the nest and slowly lifted it up , repeated that process several times , I didn't record it though :/ I wish I had a phone ready .
Gave them spinach and I plan on giving them broccoli tomorrow .

Right now, the main food is going to be hard boiled eggfood, although they will offer a tiny bit of greens and a bit of apple.

Spray millet if you have it will be fed as well.

If she's feeding, then all is well.

I wouldn't ddisturb them too much for the sake of snapping pictures. With first time parents, they may decide to abandon the chick, so I would give them their space and privacy. You will get plenty of opportunities later for pictures.

Saw your video by the way, and that is definitely a baby in that nest :D .

lovezebs I just leave the phone above the nest and let it record for an hour and see if anything happens in that time , I have learned that they love spinach especially the middle part that holds the leaf for some reason they just dig right into it , I did give them a bit of millet I think they took all of it , they didn't eat it before though .
So heres another video I have recorded the mom feeding the chick ^_^

I don't know the other way of sharing a video on the forum so I just upload the video to youtube :/
