Chick tossed
Dear Experts,
This morning I found two gouldian chicks on my cage floor.I have picked them up and put them in the cage.I am not sure if I did the right thing.I have 3 male societies sitting on two gouldian eggs on stand by.I am in dilemma if I should have put the chicks in society nest or not.How long can they be alive if not fed by their parents.
Shall i leave them with their biological parents or try to give them to society or hand feed them. This is my first experience in 1.5 yrs of 17 finch keeping my gouldians eggs have hatched to babies.
Thanks in advance

How old are they?
Might they have fledged already?
I would put them back into the nest, and watch carefully as to what happens. If they both fledged, then they will pop out of the nest again and again.
The odds of Societies feeding them at this stage are not good at all. Societies will usually feed if they hatched the eggs.

Put them back in the nest.
Just hatched chicks cannot survive without the parents keeping them warm and feeding them.

Sorry to hear that the babies were tossed again and that one died.
Maybe the Societies will accept him if he's just newly hatched, but if not you'll have to handfeed him, which is not an easy task with chicks this young.
Good luck...

Re: Chick tossed
I put the tossling back into the nest after being tossed. Because I want to give the parents every chance to raise the chick.
I will tolerate the parents tossing up to 3x.
BUT after the 3rd toss, or if the hatchling is injured in any of the tosses, they go into the societies nest to be foster raised.
A tossed hatchling will survive no more than a couple of hours.
This is because it NEEDS to be kept warm, or it will loose too much body heat and die.
So you need to find a tossling quickly, and return it to its nest or into the societies nest. The clock is ticking down. This is why I regularly check the cage floor and poop tray starting the day before scheduled hatch.
Societies are generally good about adopting and fostering tossed hatchlings, as long as they are in the fostering mood. This can be tricky with males. If the males are SITTING, they are in the fostering mood, and you are OK.
Sorry you lost one.
Now you need to feed the societies egg food regularly, for them to feed the chick.
The tricky part is if any of the eggs they are sitting on hatches.
The problem is difference in hatch date could/will result in chicks of different sizes. The larger chick(s) will usually out compete the smaller chick(s) for food. In your case, with 3 societies, they may take care of 2 more, if both eggs hatch.
gud luk
