Zebra finch nesting

Hi All

I have four pairs of zebra finches that are in breeding cages one pair has made a nest in the nest box but just seem to sit in there and I haven't seen any signs of mating yet. Two pair have took nesting material out of the nest boxes and have made little nests in the corner of the breeding cages on the floor, is this ok as it means that if I leave them then cleaning the cages will be difficult.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated

The ones that made nests on the cage floor apparently did not like your nests. Look at your nest to see why they may have not liked it. It may be position, where they felt it was not private/safe enough. If you put a sheet of plastic on the cage, behind the nest, it might make them feel safer.

If I was you I would put two types of nests a dish type that's open and a closed one like a cocunut with a hole and place these highest up as possible as they feel safer if they are higher also add a perch outside the entrance to the nest as this might be the problem as it's too diffcukt to be able to fly with nesting stuff in the beak
And for the pairs that haven't started nesting they might not like nesting material

Also don't worry about the breeding that will happen before you know it
