Non breeding cage

Can canaries that are not breeding (yet), be put in a flight cage that does not have solid walls. Sorry not good at wording. My breeding cages have solid walls, except the front which is cage. Something about canaries feeling secure when they have solid sides. Or sides that are at least covered.

Yes, they love being in a flight by a window so that they can look outside. They most definitely do not need to be boxed in.

Perhaps you can hang a piece of fabric over a side or two. Canaries, in my experience, just do better when they are in a cage that has a couple of sides covered.
My guess is that a lot of birds have a very well developed response to any sudden movement near them. They want to get away from anything that might be a threat. Unlike hookbills, I don't think many finches learn to turn off that response. With all sides of a cage open, they seem to have a lot more stress.
