Blue Gouldian maturity

Post by MAB1947 » Sun Sep 10, 2017 9:25 pm

Hi Everyone,

I have a 2 year old dilute blue back cock. He seems to have no interest in the hens at all. Do they take longer to mature?

If anyone is in Florida, GA or SC, please be safe.

Mary Ann

Gouldians are usually considered mature for breeding at around a year old.

Have you just recently purchased him Mary Ann? If that's the case, then he might have been bonded with another bird prior to your getting him.

If you've had him all along, then it might have to do with diet, housing, or possibly being bonded closely with another male.

He's a product of my breeding so I've had him all along - maybe he's boded to his Mom??[album][album][/album][/album]. I have not seen him singing, but he could be one of the cocks singing when I'm not in the room. I wondered if he was a she (his Mom has a very dark breast for a gal), but the beak never turned black when I was bringing my breeding birds into breeding condition. They are all on the same diet and there are no other birds with this lack of interest.

The bird in the picture is not fully colored yet and it looks to be a regular Blue, not a SF Yellow Blue.
Not impossible but not likely to mate till fully colored.
If you've had him for 2 years he is stuck in molt, most likely because of stress though could be diet also. A stressed out bird will not likely mate either.

Looks like the chin is going to be black so it's not a SF. As for head color, it's not colored out yet so could be anything.
Wonder what the parents were

He has had that head color since his first molt. I've seen a couple of pictures of cocks with this color head, but have no idea what the genetics are of those birds.
The white showing on his chest is where the feathers formed a part for a few minutes.

His parents:
Dad was OH, PB, Dilute/blue
Mom is BH/YTB, PB/WB, BB

His parents:
Dad was OH, PB, Dilute/blue
Mom is BH/YTB, PB/WB, BB
Then he is a YellowHead split to BlackHead. either PurpleBreast or PurpleBreast split to WhiteBreast. Blue
He is not SF Pastel Blue, you know that by his black chin color coming in. If he was SF it would be a grey color. His head (when he molts fully) will be a tanish to salmon color.
His head and chin color will change to adult colors eventually. Not sure why it is taking him so long though.

Good luck with him

Thanks everyone! Is there something I should give him??

Their diet is chitted seeds, miracle meal, filtered water, organic Kale with free feed cuttlebone, manu rock, Himalayan salt rocks. While breeding or molting: NV powder, F-vite and bloomford.
