The baby is now starting to eat on its own. It still has pin feathers on its back and head, though.

wildbird
It's definitely pied, and probably normal grey.

Re: Breeding Java Finches
I tried taking closing off the nest box today, and the female started attacking the baby. So that's not going to work. I guess I'll just have to wait for the baby to wean before I can remove the nest box.

Re: Breeding Java Finches
I moved the three Java finches into the flight cage along with their original water dish. I first saw the fledgling eat around a week and a half ago; it also seemed interested in the water dish. The male eventually figured out he could feed the baby outside of the nest box.
The younger society finches seem nervous, as they haven't seen the Java finches before. The juvenile Java finch also seems uneasy, as it doesn't know how to perch on the thin branches where its parents are sitting. The other birds seem mostly okay with the additions.
I'll leave the smaller cage prepared and see how things go.
