I'm not sure what the humidity is like inside; I imagine it's a bit lower than the outside humidity of around 70%. I had a humidity gauge a while back; perhaps I could find it.
A video sounds neat!

Re: Breeding Java Finches
I'll have to add the rest of the pictures later, but so far things are going well. I realized that I could have been recording the hatchling's weight from the beginning; unfortunately, I didn't think of that until three days ago. It weighed 9.76 grams on 1/19 and 11.48 grams on 1/20 at around 16:00; a fair increase, granted, it was just fed before I weighed it yesterday. It's been a bit cooler inside this last week, usually in the high 60s (°F), so I've tried to be faster at the nest checks.
They tossed the damaged egg around 1/16. It looked like it died several days before, perhaps due to internal hemorrhaging from damage to the inner membrane.
I switched the seed mix back to the pure white proso millet, and now they're eating most of it, rather than throwing it all over the place. I still want to order some plain canary seed.

Its growth has started to stagnate; it even lost weight since yesterday. They got freaked out and didn't feed it until late afternoon today, but they seem mostly okay now. I'll see how tomorrow goes.

You know I have handfed societies, gouldians and now javas.
I will tell you one thing that stands out. Javas crops do NOT stretch well. I had to be super careful my javas didnt thrown up after a feeding due to the amount. So trust your parents in their feedings. That is the most full crop I have seen in a java.
And javas develop almost 6 days behind a gouldians schedule. He looks good. It looks like his wingtips are tucked (?)
Instead of just seed, can you give the parents ground boiled egg? It will spurt his growth if he's healthy.

I checked several times, and there didn't seem to be any food in its crop yesterday morning. I wouldn't be worried if its crop was only slightly full, but completely empty is concerning.
The flight feathers on its wings are pretty much fully developed, with all the feather sheaths absent. It can flutter a bit, but needs a few more days before it fledges.
They have powdered eggfood, and are going through it fairly quickly. I forgot to refill it the day before yesterday, so maybe that's why they seemed uncomfortable. Would the boiled egg be more useful?
Something odd I noticed: the adults eat sunflower seeds and millet, but I only ever see millet in the chick's crop. I wonder why.

Boiled egg is primarily what Charm fed her big clutch of 7 kids. They are currently weaned and all healthy. The crew went through about 3 heaping tablespoons a day.
It can't hurt ;)

With boiled egg, do you just feed them the whole thing mushed? Or is there other ways finches prefer to eat it? I've never actually fed my birds boiled egg.Babs wrote: Icearstorm

Is that egg food? I buy egg food for my birds too. I was just wondering if boiled egg would be good for them too.Fraza wrote: THIs one it was only cheap
