The Easy-Peasy Ugly Homemade Nestbox....

Post by lovezebs » Tue Nov 28, 2017 4:57 pm

Hi All You Happy Finchers,

Having purchased a box of glass storage containers, I looked at the sturdy cardboard inserts and... *-:) *-:) *-:) .
I thought to myself, won't this insert make a lovely UGLY homemade nest box.

Out came the old scissors, a paring knife, some twist ties, and packing tape, and I went to work

Fifteen minutes later, I stood back and gazed with awe at my handywork  .

There it was: THE EASY-PEASY UGLY HOME MADE NEST BOX!!!

Very clever! Be sure to have something on the bottom so it's not so slippery that the birds can't keep their feet under them.
Good luck

I had a good laugh over the "rustic charm" comment. You should be a diplomat Finch Lady.
It's UGLY... you know it, I know it, and everyone knows it, but my silly birds love these kind of nest boxes for whatever the reason.

Debbie, thanks.... Yes, I always put a good layer of hay and shredded kleenex at the bottom, then offer the prospective parents more nesting materials to do their own thing in there.

Babs, lol.
When my serotonin receptors start sparking off stand back, and have the fire extinguisher on hand girlie, it might be dangerous...

I use, cardboard milk cartons, cut up and reconfigured.
The milk cartons stand up to the urine and poop well. And when they get too dirty, I throw them away and make another one.

Yeup, same basic idea, only the one I put together, is bigger, and therefore can be also used for bigger birds.

I like the idea of recycling things that are so readily available, and putting them to good use.

lovezebs for better ventilation, you need to add small holes on the underside

I initially did think this aswell haroun but I was more interested to see what would happen if any of the birds had a bath and then went into the nest box being a cardboard bottom,

Thoughts are thinking that it might get a bit soggy X_X

You will have to let us know if the birds use it. Very crafty, add some tape to the inside bottom and that might help with the water !!!! Hey all it needs is a few artificial flowers and greenery and it should pop !!! :D
