Firefinches breeding again

Post by Rob » Thu Jan 25, 2018 9:57 pm

Thankfully my firefinches are at it again. After the last clutch was unsuccessful (female abandoned the nest, and the male tossed the only hatchling) I'm hopeful for this one. I saw them mating last night, and the female went into the nest this morning.

As recommended by the breeder I got them from, I'm going to get my societies sitting on dummy eggs, so if another baby gets tossed there's a better chance of them adopting it.

Here's what their nest looks like that they made:

Looks like a typical Fire finch nest, so they are getting serious. Good luck with them, they are a lovely species. I think you are smart to have Societies prepared just in case. They are much more likely to accept a tossling if they have been sitting on dummy eggs and think they have hatched out a baby. Your male may have tossed before because there was just one baby. Birds often won't waste their time raising just one baby, as instinct tells them to start over for a more successful clutch.

Rob if just also like to say that nest is amazing and can’t wait for the chick photos within society’s u don’t even need dummy eggs and if not wanting to breed pick to males as these will occupy a nest quicker and if the firefinches don’t look after chick stick the chick in the society nest and they can’t resist feeding its in there nature haha

goodluck

Fraza

That's what I was told as well. Males society finches make better parents.

I'll post updates when I can. They don't seem to mind me looking at their nest, I may be able to grab some pictures of them inside. I thought the male escaped somehow, but he was in there with her this morning.

Unfortunately the lady got spooked again #-o When I removed them to put with my societies, only one egg looked viable, so maybe she knew something was up.

I'll keep waiting and for now I'm focusing on making sure their diet is top notch so any new eggs have the best chance possible.

I'm jealous.
I never got either of my pairs to breed.
Pair #1 died of old age.
So I only have the 2nd pair.
