Are there any foods that can encourage breeding. Any foods that discourage breeding. I suppose foods that are too fatty cause weight gain and make it harder (no pun intended) to mate.

Christian With waxbills, live food can get them in breeding condition.

A little hemp seed spikes canary hormones.

Use caution with hemp seed and give sparingly. I once offered free choice hemp seed, and my birds went into full egg-laying mode, but that's all the hens wanted to do--lay--but not incubate. The males just wanted to mate all the time, neither sex would settle down to actually raising a family.

Thanks for that advice! Hempseed should not be on the menu on off-season for breeding.
