What happen if no nest box is provided

Post by finchzeb » Fri Mar 09, 2018 9:54 am

What will happen if zebra finches are mating and no nest box or nest material is provided in the cage. Will they still lay eggs?

Earlier I could post the new topic so posted the same question in another forum. It might be due to the browser.

Yep they don't need a nest to lay in. They will most likely lay in the food containers although if they can't lay in them, then they will just lay on the ground.

It means there is no way to stop them to breed.

They usually won't incubate eggs that are on the ground, so the eggs shouldn't hatch.

Many birds stop breeding, or at least reduce the rate of breeding, when nest sites are removed and the diet changes. I currently have seven society finches and two gouldians on an austerity diet (plain seed and calcium sources) plus greens, and they aren't breeding. The males still sing and everyone is healthy, but none of them mate or lay eggs. My Java finch is still laying eggs, but she hasn't been on the new diet for long.
