We've got eggs!!!!!!

Post by FinchLover&Breeder » Tue Apr 10, 2018 11:09 am

Hey guys it's me Nick again. I meant to make this post a couple days ago but haven't been able to get on because of work. But good news is as of this morning my momma bird has layed her 3rd egg. However there are 4 eggs in the nest. How did I do it? But I'll keep you guys updated every day and let you know if she stops laying and when the first egg hatches. :D :D :D :D :D =D>

That is egg citing. My two fife hens are finally in the process of laying eggs. Was worried my lights messed them up. Sure enough two eggs and counting. Now the question is, are they fertile. I've had two batches of non fertile eggs. But they've been busy, so I'm thinking we have a bingo. Keep me up to date. I'm planning to build a small garden to grow kale, various lettuce, bak choi for my birds. Will be gathering lots of greens. It's a joy to watch them relish those greens, including dandelions!!!

I just checked my nests today. Both have 4 eggs. I couldn't contain myself. I will check in 7 days if they are fertile or not. Always excited to see what color combinations I get. I may breed one of the hens a second time and then let them rest until mid January 2019. If all goes well I could end up with 24 fife canaries. Once past their first molt, I will sell/give/trade several away. Next year I hope to begin line breeding.

I checked all the eggs today. Not a single fertile egg in the bunch. I removed the eggs and maybe the next eggs will be successful. I used light to check inside the eggs and the shells were all a light pastel blue. It certainly can be frustrating, but one reason or another it happens. I just hope I get a few more chicks before fall.

Here's an update for you guys:
My girl has layed 3 eggs of her own but hasn't layed one in 3 days. Can she still lay more or are they just going to incubate this small clutch.
There was 4 eggs in their nest but they could somehow tell that it had gone bad because after they tossed it, it hit the bottom of the cage and cracked open to release one of the most foul smells imaginable.
My other pair still hasn't started breeding. They made a nest that I might take away soon and replace with a different one. Any tips on getting them in the mood?

I had one male Zebs that was completely uninterested in the female but when I put him and his mate in the aviary along with another pair, he began breeding. Sadly he absolutely hopeless. He’s ditched so many lots and refuses to incubate now. #-o

Well everyone it turns out that my birds might have different plans than I do. Remember how I said I was going to try later in the year with Jack Sparrow and Momma Bird? Well when I went to remove the nest from the cage today I discovered 2 eggs in the nest that weren't there a week ago. I also discovered that my birds discovered a nifty little trick to keep their eggs safe from prying eyes. They have taken corn cob shavings from the bottom of the cage and put them in their nest. When the parents both know that they aren't going to be in the nest for a little while they cover the eggs up so it looks like an empty nest. Then when they come back to the nest they uncover the eggs and sit on them for a while occasionally trading places. It's amazing how smart my birds are. I can only hope that if this clutch is fertile than they hatch before I leave at the end of May for my cruise with my grandparents. I Mom gives my birds food and water when I'm not around to do it so I just hope that if they do hatch than they hatch before I leave because I don't want to miss the babies being born.

Well guys that's it for this update. Let me know what you think and stuff. Also if I can remember I'll try to record everything on my cruise and upload it to YouTube so that way you guys can kind of experience my trip to Belize. Can't wait to hear back from you.
