they 're really amazing those birds .FinchLover&Breeder wrote: Well everyone it turns out that my birds might have different plans than I do. Remember how I said I was going to try later in the year with Jack Sparrow and Momma Bird? Well when I went to remove the nest from the cage today I discovered 2 eggs in the nest that weren't there a week ago. I also discovered that my birds discovered a nifty little trick to keep their eggs safe from prying eyes. They have taken corn cob shavings from the bottom of the cage and put them in their nest. When the parents both know that they aren't going to be in the nest for a little while they cover the eggs up so it looks like an empty nest. Then when they come back to the nest they uncover the eggs and sit on them for a while occasionally trading places. It's amazing how smart my birds are. I can only hope that if this clutch is fertile than they hatch before I leave at the end of May for my cruise with my grandparents. I Mom gives my birds food and water when I'm not around to do it so I just hope that if they do hatch than they hatch before I leave because I don't want to miss the babies being born.
Well guys that's it for this update. Let me know what you think and stuff. Also if I can remember I'll try to record everything on my cruise and upload it to YouTube so that way you guys can kind of experience my trip to Belize. Can't wait to hear back from you.

The clutch is only 4 eggs. However I believe that they are fertile because a couple appear to be getting a little bit bigger. Am I just imagining a change in egg size because I want babies?

Ok. I only have 4 days left before my cruise and I want to see them hatch before I leave. It would be sad to miss it.

4 days should be enough time if they are fertile, though it's hard to know for sure.

Re: We've got eggs!!!!!!
Hi to everyone! This is my first post, but I have read many over the past 5 months for advice. Became a member last week, so hopefully will not break any rules...
I have a pair of shaft-tail grass finches about 10 months old. Hen laid one eggs, which broke about three days ago. Yesterday afternoon I saw 3 new ones. This morning she is shabby looking and clearly ill. Puffed up and just hopping on the ground. She can barely fly and allowed me to pick her up (first time for me). Still eating, but her beak has gone from bright orange-red to pale peach. She was fine yesterday.
I am not sure she will survive the night. Surely hope so (love my "ninja's"). I think, from your posts that it may be egg-binding? What can I do short-term, i.e. between now and tomorrow morning. Will she die that quickly?
Advice will be much appreciated.

Re: We've got eggs!!!!!!
Just to add. I feed them egg food every day with vitamins and crushed egg shell. Live meal worms every 3rd day. Variety of sees, sprouted and greens. I have cuttle-bone and grit in the aviary, which is outdoor. Live on the east coast of South Africa, so basically tropical climate. Aviary has plenty of sunlight, etc.
Can't think of what I may be doing wrong or could be doing better.
