I've been observing my fife canaries for several hours. She has a nest and is always fixing it up. The male mounted her sort of. Just hopped on her backside. No contact to pass sperm in to her vent. I hope he can do better than that!! I also noticed that when i approach a boy, they go through that motions of mating the hen, if to tell me, "I'm mating her not you." Sorry sentence structuring is bad today.

Mine does the same, hoped this year would be better, but nope. He still just hits her back. I think some are just bad at it.

That’s what my canaries did too.... only the eggs hatched.

Then there must have been a proper contact at some point, because hitting the back doesn't fertilize anything!

Yes must have been. I obviously just didn’t see it!
