Breeding Season, Help required

Post by The Maltese » Tue Aug 21, 2018 3:11 pm

I am having difficulty determining the best time to breed Australian finches.

I am located in the Mediterranean and so far seems like the best breedng season would September to May. Due to cold weather (the lowest we have is around 9 degrees) I have been advised to give the birds a break between December and January.

Can some of you expert guys confirm this?

In December and January to discourage breeding what diet should I feed?

Secondly, does this breeding season apply for African finches?

Thank you all in advance.

This is a very good question! I haven't found an answer yet - I live at Canary Islands.
My actual 'idea' is to adapt the timing to the breeding of the related wild finches over here - such as wild canaries - and this would coincide with the coldest month - february, few days with 10ºC at the coast, some weeks with a night low of 5ºC up the mountains - . First rains commence in october/november which is the time I've planned to introduce sprouted seed to the diet, which until then will be dry seeds austerity diet, with little green.

Will be interesting to see answers coming in!
