New canary couple not getting along???

Post by Liz » Sun Jan 20, 2019 5:27 am

Hi all,

I hope someone will be able to offer some advice!

I have had a single female canary for a few months and she has been laying eggs every month or so, calling for a male etc. A few days ago I purchased a male from a breeder (definitely a male) and they don’t seem to get along?

He is not bothering her at all in fact he stays away from her. But she is always chasing him around the cage, not attacking him per se just trying to sit near him but he keeps flying away from her.

Also sometimes he does mate with her but then he stays away??

I’ve also just noticed that sometimes she does hold her beak open but she’s not biting him.

Is this normal behaviour?

Is this just because I’ve only had him for a few days?

I don’t have a second cage to separate them and I am hoping this will settle down as I don’t understand what is happening.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Liz

Please get another cage and separate them. It's a long process before they should actually be together-separate cages, then the cages go next to each other, and you don't actually have them in the same cage until she starts building a nest and showing other signs of readiness. When they share a cage before they are ready, one of them may get hurt or killed.
