Our zebra finch babies are almost ready to fledge..

Once they are out of the nest I dont plan on letting the pair have any more....for at least 6 months or perhaps a year...


I would like to have nests in the cage as it seems like it would be more comfortable for them to sleep in a nest than perched on a perch.

So that means any eggs they might lay I will have to remove..
which is fine.

Question:
When an egg or two is removed will they just keep on laying or will they eventually stop for a bit.
Am I going to be stuck removing eggs every couple of days until I decide they can have more babies?

I have zebs in a aviary outside they kept laying for awhile but when I took the nesting material out they have stopped for the most part ,I left the nest in just no material.

zebras can and will breed anywhere anytime. if you leave the nest in you will be removing eggs every few days for a while. I tried putting zebras on an austerity diet (dry seed only) and they were still trying. removed nest and had a couple of eggs appear in the food dish. after a while though they did stop. but a few months later within a couple of days of
re-introducing a nest they had eggs again.

The only nesting material we have in there is timothy hay that I put in a wire ball. They pull it out and take it into the nest.

Yeah, they will keep laying eggs as long as there is a nest in the cage. They are perfectly fine sleeping on a perch. All my zebras have done fine without a nest in the cage. I had over 70 zebra finches at one time and they were breeding and having babies like crazy. I took out the nest and only found a few eggs after that on the bottom of the cage and now they dont lay any eggs unless they have a nest.
