Nest material

I want to offer my zebras some type of nesting material but I'm not sure what to give them. I don't have coco fibre where I live so I'm looking for alternatives. I noticed while doing a search that people use burlap, sisal, and some use hay, feathers.
1) When you say jute, do you mean the stuff that looks like string and comes in a roll? Do you just cut small pieces and give it to the birds?
2) I noticed someone said to microwave the feathers if you are taking them from a pillow, even if it's brand new. Would putting the feathers in the freezer not work as well to kill any mites?
3) I have lots of timothy hay available since I have a bunnies and guinea pigs. Do I cut the hay down to smaller pieces if I decide to use that?
4) Should I use only one type of material or offer them several and see which ones they prefer?
