Society---how to stop breeding?

Post by inex » Fri Dec 12, 2008 9:31 am

I have a couple of society and they got one baby.
It is a young couple and this one is their first.
The baby was still in nest and they began to lay eggs again.
Today there is a 5th egg.

The young one is about 33 days old and it seems that he tries
to take care of the eggs(so funny).
I installed a webcam above the nest and I watch
the action on my tv.

The question is after the next babies, how can I stop them
to make more?
Notice that previously they were sleeping in a nest.
When I removed it, they were sleeping on a branch
on top of the other...so we put the nest back.
It seems that they want to sleep very close.

Is there a way that they can sleep together without making babies?

Society Finches (and most finches) do not need a nest to be happy. They will be fine sleeping on their perches. Honest!

Yes, it's true. They'll get used to being without a nest. They like to cuddle together at night, be it on a branch or in a nest. But as long as there's a nest they'll keep laying eggs.

Personally, I like to have a nest for my society and owls to sleep in.

I know they don't "need" one, but they love it.

I toss the eggs the society finches lay and soon they get the message.
They then stop laying.
