Nesting Privacy Questions

Post by FeatherHarp » Mon Dec 15, 2008 3:52 pm

My Owls aren't officially nesting or laying eggs quite yet...but I am still hoping!

I understand they don't like nest checks but I am wondering about whether it will be a problem for them if I continue to vacuum around their cage and change out the papers daily. Do you think this would cause them to abandon the nest once they start sitting? I usually hang a fleece covering around the cage at night as well.

I have already put up more privacy barriers by taping some paper towels around the one side of the cage where the nest is because I felt just the Ivy wasn't enough. Being the flight is close to the doorway from the kitchen to the dining room I decided to cover that end of the cage so they hopefully won't be bothered by my coming and going all day.

Here is a pic of what I did...I hope that will be enough for them to feel private and safe in the nest. Any suggestions our cautions would be much appreciated! :D

And yes the Viking statue named "Thor" watches over us and the birdies!

I'm not sure what other's do, but when mine are close to nesting, I don't clean the cage, vacuum or anything. I rarely even put my hand inside the cage. The food and water are both changed from the outside of the cage.

Sensible precautions FH...Wouldn't worry too much about the vacuum...but leave cage cleaning alone till the chicks are about a week old.
