Hecks grassfinch

Well...I put the Hecks back in their summer flight as they wouldn't settle indoors for the winter in cages.
Temperature in there gets pretty low at night but they've decided to build nests...Boxes supplied but they prefer to build their own...I've decided to leave them to it...up to press there are 5 different nests...I won't disturb them so eggs or not I don't know...We shall see...

I am just curious how cold does it get? I worry about my pair that I leave in the classroom over the weekend. The heat doesn't come on until it gets to about 50 degrees in there. I do have a heat lamp over them.
Those are great nest they are building. I think once they have had their freedom, a cage is hard for them.

Great photos, Paul! I agree with Donna, once they have had the room to fly, a cage really is a huge adjustment. Can you hang a heat lamp in the flight?

There is a small tubular heater in there that the birds used to roost near...see pic. But it is nowhere near their nests.The temperature can drop to 40f...
My gouldians kept in the other birdroom are kept at a constant 60f

My Hecks that are kept outside survive temps of 40degrees every winter for days on end so I'm sure they would be OK. Wouldn't hurt to get the room up a couple of degrees though.
Very impressive nests and great pic 2. Let us know if they produce any chicks!

No signs yet...but there must be eggs as they are sitting continuously.I'm not going in to find out it would be too disruptive...that's the trouble with a small flight.

Nice photos PoohBear.....I hope you will get some eggs hatching soon! It would be fun to have a "nest cam" in every nest to see the progress.

Shut up you over heated person...You outa be here it's 'orrible...Wish I was 20 again I'd nick a sheep so they would send me to your country...Well a couple of hundred years back anyway...

Well it's a horrible 32C(90F) sunny day here in South Africa Today.
Phoobear, maybe they used to send the sheep with the thief to OZ all those years ago, but looks like the sheep are doing better there!!
