Pintail Whydah questions

Post by hfentj » Mon Dec 29, 2008 6:40 pm

Have read that in order to raise babies you need St. Helena with the Pintails. Will other waxbills work?

I've never heard that St. Helena would foster. I have a hard enough time getting them to sit and feed their own. We have always been tolb that you need the Melba finch to foster Whyda eggs and chicks.

Pintail Wydahs are parasitic on St Helena's. Melba's and Aurora's are used for Wydah's also but I think it may be for another species, maybe Paradise Wydah, not sure as we don't have them here anymore that I am aware of.

Pintail Wydah breeders will generally have a large avairy with many pairs of St Helena's in a colony and a trio of Pintails. This setup is certainly one of the things I plan to achieve in the not too distant future.

Matt,

You, learned me something new. :)

One of the great things about this forum is getting input from around the globe and hearing how things are done everywhere else.

Thanks.

I saw my first Whydah at the local pet store today..
only had 1 at $75.00.
Was pretty cool and I would love to have a pair but I cant really find too much info on them.
Are they hard to breed?
