EGG VIABILITY

Post by Misso » Mon Jan 12, 2009 7:58 pm

Hello all.

I know that the Gouldian Eggs have a expiry date as such in regards to
how long they can last intill incubation commences.

If i can recall its around 7 days after being laid? corrections please.

And so i know they can surive without incubation. but i was wondering
if the eggs can be ruined by Heat??

Iv been out in the Aviarys and the first lot of eggs are being laid for
the season. and today and tomoro will be very hot close to 40 degrees
here in Melbourne Australia. so i was curious to know if anyone knows
the effects on the eggs, which havent started being incubatored yet.

Jarryd :)

Yup, 7 days.

40 degrees C does sound hot. I've heard of birds not incubating when it's really hot so they stay out of the nest. Your Gouldians haven't starting sitting yet?

No Gouldians sitting yet, 1-2 eggs in a few boxes so they are just starting to lay the 1st clutches.

Exessive heat can cause dead in shell. Generally that would be restricted to nests that are built against a tin roof or against a wall exposed to direct sunlight. I think they should be fine as long as the nest boxes are well positioned to avoid the above circumstances.

I am curious though, if the first egg is laid on a very hot day where the temp stays around the normal incubating temp all day, this would have to start the emryo growing. If the next day brings a cold change and the parents haven't started incubating yet, does the egg die?

the heat shouldnt be to much of a problem. same temperature's here at the moment and the birds are still acting as though it is in the 20c range.
Addicted to Finches, yes I do admit it.
I pray they never find a cure.
