Big gouldians

Post by chrischris » Thu Jan 15, 2009 7:58 pm

Just banded my 3 gouldians that were 9 days old and I could hardly get the ban over the leg. Luckly I did it today as I was going to wait till this weekend when they would be 11 days old. I'm sure that it would not have fitted if I would have waited.

These parents are really feeding the chicks. Their BIG.

What size bands are you using? I use AACC size C's on Gouldians and Stars. I once waited until day 8 to band 5 Gouldians - it was very tough and I will never wait that long again. I do it now on day 6 - much easier on the chicks and me; and the bands stay on.

To be honest with you I don't know the size. I ordered it from the web that says they are for "OUR SMALL BAND: AMERICAN ZEBRA FINCH, SISKIN, ENGLISH ZEBRA FINCH, GOULDIAN FINCH, SOCIETY FINCH" so I figure it should be the right size.

I've used them last year and they seem to fit just fine on the goulds but guess I banded them much earlier. I just hate to band the birds as I always have this fear that the bands will constrict the blood flow just like tight rings on people's fingers. But I do it if I remember and psych myself up for the challange as people like birds banded when they are being purchased.

Yes I too think people do perfer to purchase a bird with a band rathen than one without - I know I prefer to see a bird with a closed band on it. To prove the age plus I can trace the owner to find out about the parents if it's a registered band.

Anyway... if you check the AACC website - they list all the sizes for the finches. I band my Societies with one size larger than Gouldians. Also, if those bands you bought will fit English Zebras then there should be NO problem with them on Gouldians... provided you band them early enough. I have more banding of Gouldians to do early next week (tuesday = day 6) if all goes right between now and then.
