Will I ever learn?

Post by Sally » Sat Jan 17, 2009 5:36 pm

As I mentioned before, this breeding season has not been too great so far. Of course, I checked my records from last year, and it didn't get into high gear till spring, so maybe I am expecting too much too soon. Anyway, my #1 RCCB has been tossing babies, not all at once, but one on one day, then another maybe two or three days later, till they had finally tossed 4. In disgust, I checked their nest, finding 2 DIS eggs, so I cleaned out their cage. #3 RCCB pair sat for a full two weeks on clear eggs, so I cleaned out their cage too. #2 RCCB pair has been sitting tight. Cleaned their cage, and no sign of the male at all. Peeked in the nest, and there he was, not moving at all. I was heartsick, here was another dead finch. I took down the nest, and just as I manuevered it out the cage door, he came flying out of the nest, right into my face, and out into the birdroom--very much alive! Looked in the nest--sure enough, he is sitting on some warm fuzzies. Took me about 15 minutes to catch him--actually, I couldn't catch him, just left one side of the cage open, and he flew back in. Gave them tons of mealworms and left the room so they could settle down. I hope I haven't ruined everything, I'll have to keep a close eye on them.
