Hi all,

I am new to this forum and to keeping Finches. I hope to gain from your exeriences, to take better care of my feathered friends.

I have 2 society finches in a large cage with two nest boxes. One of these is a male, since he sings and displays. I am not sure about the sex of the other. I want to breed them now. Since I am not sure if they are a true pair (male & female), I would like to know if I should buy and introduce another female society finch into the same cage? This way I can be sure that there will be at least one bird of each sex in the cage. Would the three of them live peacefully and breed in the same cage, since it has enough room and two nest boxes as well? Also, what are the various possible scenarios: (1) given its 2 males and 1 female; (2) if its 2 females and 1 male, in the cage? Any inputs/suggestions will be highly appreciated.

I don't know if it's the norm for societies, but my 3 (2 female and 1 male) get along great together. I separated the second female out at one point, but she looked so forlorn I put her back in with the other two. The 3 have raised two nestfuls to fledging, all taking turns at the duties! Of course, I did lose one chick that looked like he had been squashed by all of those finch bottoms.....
